As per usual there have been both good and bad news stories concerning the world of recruitment this week. Here are some of the most notable stories to hit the headlines.

Cadets are called for at Grampian Police

A new group of police cadets are being sought by Grampian Police. The new recruits will start as cadets in August this year and complete a year long course. This could be the first step towards becoming a police officer for those who do well on the course and show promise for the more demanding role.

Could recruitment in the Army be privatised?

It could if ministers approve the choice of Capita, an outsourcing firm, as the supplier of new army recruits. It is hoped that significant savings can be made by outsourcing the recruitment process. However not everyone is pleased with the decision – not least Kevan Jones, the Shadow Armed Forces Minister.

Flexible working opportunities to be highlighted at a recruitment fayre

More and more people are working part time for many reasons. Full time jobs are harder to get and many people want flexibility to enable them to look after their children. Thus a Leamington based recruitment fayre should be good news for those who want to explore this type of working in more detail. The fayre is due to take place on February 23rd between 3pm and 7pm. Attendees should visit the Bath Place Community Venture, which is in Avenue Road.

Huge job losses at Qantas

500 jobs have been announced to go at Qantas. The beleaguered airline has seen profits dive by a huge 83%, leading to cost cutting exercises to try and take hold of the problem. Although the jobs represent just 2% of the total workforce, it is still a worrying time for the company.

Good news and bad news – the story of the times?

It has been a mixed week on the recruitment front, as can be seen above. David Lyons, MD of online recruitment software firm eBoss, said: “There have been other instances where companies have announced further job losses on the back of a poor performance in the current economic climate. But it is also heartening to see efforts to turn things around in some areas”.
